Cumin has a unique, strong taste with a sharp note and is now mainly found in Indian, Oriental, but also Central American cuisines. It was brought to the latter region by the Spanish in the 16th century, who at that time and in the Middle Ages used it primarily as a medicinal plant. The spice can be found in curry mixes, chili con carne and falafels and is often used in the Netherlands to flavour cheese. The origin of cumin, which is considered to be one of the oldest spices in the world, is likely to be in the Middle East.
