Flax is one of the oldest cultivated plants with a cultivation history of 6,000 to 10,000 years and played an exceptionally large role in ancient Egypt and elsewhere. Linen was made from the flax fibers and the seeds served as a valuable source of fat. Because of its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, linseed oil is one of the healthiest oils around. However, linseed oil is more suitable for cold dishes and less for frying. The nutty, mild tasting seeds stimulate digestion and are an ideal ingredient for yogurt, muesli, bread and baked goods.
