The exact origin of poppy, one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, is difficult to determine, but is probably in the Middle East. The most important variety is the blue poppy (also called the opium poppy) and was already very relevant in ancient Egypt. The blue poppy seeds have a slightly nutty taste and are in Europe particularly popular to be sprinkled over pastries, but in ground form they are also popular as an ingredient in desserts. A delicious edible oil can also be pressed from the seeds, but this has only been a niche product so far. Another common type of poppy is the white poppy, which is found mainly in Arabic and Indian cuisine.
